7 Jan 09 - Stop this vicious cycle!

I know being a typical Singaporean, I should not comment on international affairs, since it is the ‘job of the government’, not common citizens like me. But I’m really totally upset!!

Everyone knows no place is safe during war, but still.. there is International Humanitarian Law which defines the conduct and responsibilities of belligerent nations, neutral nations and individuals engaged in warfare, in relation to each other and to protected persons, usually meaning civilians! Very often, humanitarian institutions hold a great importance during battle. Not only do they provide medical aid and treatment, they also serve as ‘a place of security’ in the midst of all insecurity. Of course, the persons-in-charge of these institutions face such great decision to identify, guard and to defend whoever wish to enter and whoever under the protection of such institutions.

Yet, having identified as UN school institution in Gaza, there is no safe place for the kids. True, there are some militants taking refuge in this UN school. But why cant they? Everyone has the right to ‘repent’ for their actions, and turn to seek protection under these international institutions. Even God told Moses and Joshua to set aside cities of refuge for anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood (Joshua 20: 1-3)! Is it justifiable to attack the school full of innocent kids because of some repented militants?

.. my heart aches for the poor kids.. cant imagine what a great scar this battle has made in their minds and hearts.. how much insecurity is planted in these young hearts.. what a childhood scar they will have to live with 20yr?30yrs? or even 50yrs down the road!
This is really a vicious cycle someone has to stop it!!

Despite the insecurity from the financial tsunami, let us pray for wisdom for leaders in Israel and Palestine; pray for comfort and protection on the innocents; and peace and reconciliation for Gaza. In Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen!
